Product Thrash: The Ultimate Quad Lock Mount Review

A Pro's Guide to Building a Skateboard [All Essential Parts Explained] Reading Product Thrash: The Ultimate Quad Lock Mount Review 4 minutes

In 2021, I took the plunge and purchased a Quad Lock to mount my cell phone on my Yamaha, initiating my journey with a brand that, although costly, proved worth the premium.

Initial Purchase and Thoughts on the Case

I was reluctant to buy a phone case with a permanent protrusion on the back—a feature typical of mounting systems. The aesthetic and practical concerns of having a constant bump on my phone case made me hesitant. However, I purchased it anyway, taking the risk of being annoyed. Gratefully, I found that it was not that big of a deal. Though I will say I don't mind a larger phone.

The build of the Quad Lock case was noticeably sturdy, designed to withstand the rigors of active use, especially appealing for someone like me who drops their phone more often than I'd like to admit.

Any initial discomfort due to the bump was quickly forgotten as soon as I clicked the case into its housing for the first time. It was incredibly satisfying and hit all my OCD feels. It still takes me 1-2 times for the moto mount with wide wireless charger, but other Quad Lock mounts are no issue.

Weather Proofing for Moto Riding

I didn't need the up-sell for the weatherproof sleeve, though maybe that's the naive Californian coming out. IP68 rating on the Pixel 6 Pro means the highest level of dust protection (zero dust is supposed to intrude) and for water, the phone is protected if immersed in up to 1.5m (4.9ft) of water for up to 30 minutes.

Camera Damage from Motocycle Riding

Camera damage was caused by the vibrations of the bike. I bought the dampener, and it definitely seems to help, though I am not sure it's 100%. After 1k miles, I toasted my Pixel 4 XL camera without the dampener. The camera could no longer focus. I got a new phone, and the Pixel 6 Pro after about 10k miles with dampener seems to have trouble focusing. Hard to say if it's related, but I suspect it is. Use with caution, but also by the time you have an issue, it could also be time for a new phone.

Wireless Charger

I opted to purchase the wireless charger so that I could keep my phone topped off when on the go. It's so much easier to use than a wired charger, though it is not without it's drawbacks.

The speed of the charger is slow. At least for my Pixels, fast charging is not applicable with wireless charge. You'll have the snail pace: From 0% to 100% takes about 4 hours.

However, the real drawback is the heat. If it's a hot day, the pace of the charger can become zero. This also happened in my car, to the point I just use the cable.

Quad Lock for Bicycle Riding

The aluminum handlebar mount from Quad Lock is so perfect for biking that it makes me wish I could use this specific metal mount for everything (vs the plastic). Its robust design fits seamlessly onto the handlebars, providing a secure and stable platform for the phone.

The tactile "click" as the phone snaps into place is incredibly satisfying—so much so that I found myself attaching and detaching my phone more often than strictly necessary...

This click is not just audibly pleasing; it's a solid confirmation that the device is securely fastened, giving you peace of mind as you tackle rough trails or busy urban roads. This mount's exceptional functionality and ease of use make it an essential tool for any cyclist who wants to keep their phone accessible and safe during rides.
